Synopsis
Set circa 1890, the play is based on a short story by Thomas Hardy "On the Western Circuit". The play concerns a young London barrister, Charles Brandford, who is visiting a west country town, Salisbury, "on the western circuit", and the effect he has on the quiet lives of two women living there, the wife of a local brewer and her young maidservant.
